I got some very good carrots out of the garden this season. Apparently they dig the deep bed method. Har har. And apparently planting them in a square bordered by sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) helps keep the carrot fly at bay. I only found one that had a small carrot fly hole in it, despite leaving some of them in the ground for rather a while. There were two carrots that were weirdly deformed, presumably from slugs. I mean with deformed patches where the outside is splayed back to reveal the inside, not just weirdly-shaped. Although I have had a few of those too. They keep life interesting. It’s a pity I didn’t keep up very well with my successive carrot sowing, but it was a very hot summer, making it hard to keep soil surfaces moist for germination anyway. I still have a few carrots growing in the garden and have just sowed some more, which will hopefully grow before it gets too cold.
