Seven years ago, The Husband and I moved to our very own dear house on a small country section in the Waikato, New Zealand, which, along with the website, was previously known as Twiglet Homestead. I had a big belly, being halfway to the appearance of our third little family member, but I was full of dreams and plans, and still am.

Home is my happy place. And my favourite place of all is in the garden. I like to grow all sorts of things, with a particular fondness for edibles, native plants and burgundy coloured flowers and foliage. There is a whole heap of work to be done in the garden, which keeps me busy, along with my millions of other projects and being an at-home mum for two young children: our bright sparks of joy and cheekiness.

I’m on a mission to become more productive, sustainable, natural and any other number of things that make our lives more simple, healthy and responsible. However, I try to avoid the term ‘self-sufficiency’ as I think that leads to more harm than good. We need community. We need God. There is more to life than working your butt off around the home and garden in order to have everything ‘set-up’. Relationships are just as important as tasks. And the process must be enjoyed, not just the end result. We don’t have to do everything, just what we can manage according to our circumstances.

I don’t think there’s any one theory, school of thought or idea that adequately explains everything, outside of God’s word. My studies in psychology and sociology taught me to have a healthy skepticism about everything and to research and think about things for myself rather than take information at face value. With that in mind, these are some of the schools of thought, ideas and concepts that influence me in my homesteading way of life:

• Being a good steward of the earth/creation
• Permaculture
• Organics
• Regenerative agriculture
• Food security
• Whole foods
• Natural ingredients
• Sustainability
• Eco-friendly options

We only have a small property, but there’s a bigger one on the way, some time in the future. My dreams are fast outgrowing our little piece of land. In the meantime, there are still plenty of things to get done here and I believe in being a good steward of whatever we have right now and learning whatever I can along the way.
