There are so many things that I want to do in the garden. As the days are getting longer and slightly warmer my green fingers are getting itchier. But there’s this big bump and a thing called tiredness and another thing called softened ligaments that get in the way of me doing too much gardening. It is one month until the Little Twiglet is officially due.
But there are a few things that have been done in the garden. There are eight hydrangeas in the front garden that I have pruned, plus two other wee ones. This is the first time I’ve had to prune hydrangeas properly and I don’t think these fullas had been done for rather a while. I had a few thoughts in my head about how this should be done, based on knowledge read at some point and hauled up from the back of my mind, so off I went. After I had done a few I thought I should probably google how to prune hydrangeas, just to be sure. This lead me to go back and prune them harder and take out some of the masses of stems to make them less congested and more nicely shaped. Hopefully they grow back ok. Some of them were rather large and gangly and congested with pieces of walnut tree branch and ivy. Fortunately I only managed to get a small rash on my arm from my nemesis, ivy.

The Husband has now finished assembling the first raised vege bed. We still have to sort out the weeds and soil inside it, which reminds me, I still need to find some horse poop. I would like to get the chickens in there to have a crack at digging things over as soon as I can figure out a moveable fence solution to stop them from disappearing through the paddock fences.

The other thing I’ve done in the garden is plant a few native grasses. I know I said I was going to focus on the edible gardens first, but they involve hefty work that I can’t do at the moment. The herb garden has some stumps in it that need removing before I can plant the fruit trees and herbs in there. And I just really wanted to plant some things. Out the front of the house I pulled up a strip of weedmat, which seems to be a common feature around here, and dug out a few plants that I didn’t want there. I planted the two small hydrangeas elsewhere for the meantime and potted up some yukkas. I probably shouldn’t be digging things out at the moment… But I did leave a camellia stump in there for The Husband to deal with… Then I planted some Carex tenuiculmis, which is a large, red-brown sedge.

Just around the corner I pulled up more weedmat and planted some Carex comans ‘Frosted Curls’, one of our popular native light green sedges. I have plenty more space to plant more of my grasses, but not right now, I’m pooped!
